Abstract

603,165. Centrifugal fans. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., and VOYSEY, R. B. May 31, 1945, No. 13743. [Class 110 (i)] An impeller is constructed having substantially radially extending vanes each rigidly connected along one edge to a mass comprising hub and disc and adapted to transmit into said disc without substantial change in magnitude or relative change in phase, vibration exciting impulses externally applied to the vanes, whereby-at any given instant the effect on the disc of-any one group of external regularly applied and equal vibration-exciting impulses acting for example on the tips of the vanes is wholly or partly counterbalanced by the combined effect of the other impulses on said disc. One method of carrying this into effect is described and consists in making the root thickness of each vane 2 at its outlet edge 6 at least 75 per cent of the root thickness of the typical vane section, which section lies in a normal plane through the blade tip Y, said plane making an angle with a transverse plane of substantially 55 degrees. By a suitable choice of the number of impeller and diffuser vanes the vector resultant of the impulses transmitted from the impeller blades to the disc can be made to approximate to zero. A method of determining the resonant frequency of impeller vanes is also described.
