Abstract
603,164. Joining metal plates etc; walls; floors. DETROIT STEEL PRODUCTS CO. May 28, 1945, No. 13370. Convention date, June 7, 1944. [Classes 20(ii) and 20 (iv)] Relates to metallic building structures, and comprises the prefabrication from sheet metal of units which may be assembled to form the flooring, roofing and walls in such a manner as to facilitate the installation of conduits and wiring. Fig. 2 shows two units assembled together. Each is formed from a wider sheet 5 and a narrower sheet 4, parallel to one another, and spaced apart by stiffening webs 6. One edge of the wider sheet 5 has a curved flange 12, and the opposite edge has a plain flange 9. Both the flanges at the edges of the narower sheets 4 are curved. The plain flange of the wider sheet of one unit engages in the curved flange of the wider sheet of an adjacent unit, the units thus being joined with their faces in flush relation Owing to the top sheet being narrower than the bottom a channel is left between the web members of adjacent assembled units, which may be used for wiring, as shown in Fig. 4. The channel is closed by a cover 3, the edges of which have plain flanges which engage in the curved flanges at the edges of the narrower sheets of adjacent units. Interlocking means are provided by the bosses 15 on the plain flanges of both the covers and the wider sheets, the opening of the curved flanges having a width such as to require the springing of the flanges into engagement. Economy of material may be effected by making the sheets 4 and 5, the web member 6, and the cover 3 of different gauge material, according to the relative stresses therein under load. Reverting,to Fig. 4, the ends of the units are in alignment, and the adjacent ends of the web members 6 are cut away at 17 to receive a trough 19 which extends transversely of the units, and which is closed by a cover plate. The side walls of the troughs are provided with plugs for the passage of wiring into the channels of the units. Plates 23 may be made in the covers 3 for the passage of the wiring through the flooring 21, 22. The units may be assembled to form a wall, as shown in Fig. 7, and may contain sound-deadening materials as insulation 33. Fig. 7 also shows an arrangement for completing the flooring when the width between the opposite walls is not a multiple of the width of the units, employing a starter unit 27 of less width than the standard units. The sheets and covers may be perforated if desired, and the sound deadening material may be spaced from the sheets on grids. The sheets under compression may be ribbed in various ways, as shown for example in Fig. 9. Fig. 15 illustrates the unit with its narrower sheet 49 and also its cover 50 each formed with a depressed rib 51 which forms a groove for the nailing strip 52 having its outer face flush with the outer faces of the sheet and cover.
