Abstract

602,736. Coloured cigarettes. FRIEDWALD, H. Jan. 31, 1945, No. 2454. [Class 130] [Also in Groups VIII, XXIV and XXXV] The middle portion c of a cigarette is coloured (preferably with aniline) leaving uncoloured bands d; e at the ends. In a continuous-rod cigarette making machine an uncoloured band is left along the edge of the paper web which is to be gummed. In the machine for coating the web, shown in Fig. 3, the colouring material is supplied to the paper web f as it is drawn from a spool 12 around a roller 14 by rubber plates 43, 44 on a roller 20 which is fed from a high speed roller 23, rotating in a reservoir 22, through an adjustable roller 24. To ensure that the cutter 11 of the cigarette making machine severs the web at the same point in relation to the coloured portion a regulator 17 (see Group XXXV) through which the web passes is provided adjacent the cigarette making machine. If the coloured portion is incorrectly located in relation to the severing mechanism the regulator causes rotation of a ring gear 38, forming part of a differential gear 31 through which the roller 20 is driven from the main drive shaft 90, and advances or retards the time at which the plates 43, 44 apply colour to the web. To prevent the plates smearing the web during adjustment the roller 20 has a loose driving connection (see Group XXIV) with its shaft 30, which allows the roller to be adjusted only when the recesses between the plates 43, 44 are in engagement with the web. When the roller 20 is rendered inoperative by moving a hand lever 75 to disengage a clutch 29, the roller 24 is swung away from the roller 20 by linkage 81-86 which closes an electric switch 87, 88 to start a motor 78 which keeps the rollers 23, 24 rotating. The web f may pass through a drying chamber before entering the cigarettemaking machine.
