Abstract
601,779. Seed-sowing machines. STEVENS, A. G. Oct. 13, 1945, No. 26836. [Class 6(i)] In a device for sowing seeds in which a member is provided with a plurality of pockets in sequence, having a seed ejector for removing excess seeds, and in which selected seeds are restrained in the pockets by pocket closure means, the edges of the pockets are curved. A pocketed grooved wheel 1, rotating inside a hopper 3 is provided with a wiper bar 6 for ejecting excess seeds. The position of the bar with relation to the pockets may be varied by a device 9 inserted in any one of a series of holes 11. A pocket, closure means 12 is retained in resilient contact with the pockets by means of springs 15 and the extent of its movement relative to the pockets may be varied in a similar manner to the wiper bar 6. The seeds fall through a changeable nozzle 20 in the bottom of the hopper, the nozzle having a rectangular, triangular or circular exit hole. Alternatively the nozzle may comprise two adjustable plates held together by screws. A rubber roller with brush means 17 for cleaning the pockets may be brought into contact with the wheel 1 by means external to the supply hopper. Inclined ports are provided in the base for the disposal of dust and husks. The pocket closure means may comprise a spring wire attached at each end of the hopper wall. A flexible belt having pockets moulded therein or having separate cups fixed thereto, mounted on two horizontally disposed wheels may be substituted for the grooved wheel. Alternatively a wheel having vertically disposed holes may be mounted on a vertical axis and the hopper partitioned so that the seeds are collected in one half and passing an ejector proceed through a hole in the partition to a nozzle. In other forms of supply hopper, one wall may be divided vertically, the two halves being vertically hinged; the bottom of the hopper may be made in one piece hinged at one side of the hopper and clamped to the other side. The nozzle may be cast integral with the inside of the supply hopper, one half of the nozzle being cast integral with one wall and the second half cast integral with the removable side. Specification 575,222, [Group XVIII], is referred to.
