601,523. Gauges. SIGMA INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd., and LOXHAM, J. May 4, 1945, No. 11389. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XIX] Pneumatic gauging apparatus of the type in which the amount of air escaping through a nozzle controlled by the workpiece is a measure of the dimension of the workpiece is characterized in that the escaping air is used to unbalance a Wheatstone bridge to indicate the dimension electrically. Air is fed under pressure through a restriction 2 in a pipe, one limb 4 of which leads to a compensating valve 11 which maintains the pressure in the limbs 3, 4 substantially uniform. The limb 3 has two gauging nozzles 6, 7 from which the air escapes at a rate depending on the inside diameter of the workpiece. A Wheatstone bridge network includes two heating filaments 13, 14 inside the pipes 3, 4, the bridge being balanced when a master piece is being gauged. A variation from standard causes a variation in the flow of air in the pipes 3, 4 to cool the filaments 13, 14 differentially and so to vary their resistances and unbalance the bridge. A galvanometer G, which may be of the type described in Specification 601,540, [Group XXXVI], indicates the variation from standard.
