Abstract

601,493. Tufting-machines. TANSEY, N. Oct. 3, 1945, No. 25718. [Class 112] A tufting-machine comprises means for feeding a fabric sheet 2 under tension, a series of needles 4 adapted to feed yarn 7 through the fabric in loop form, a looper device 9 at an angle to each needle to receive the loops 8, and means for moving the needle towards the looper to place the loops on the looper. In the form shown, the needles 4 are tubular, cut away at one side to form a pointed end, and the yarn 7 is passed through the needles; the needles are mounted in a carrier 5 which is reciprocated, for example, by eccentrics, to pass the needles into the fabric 2 between guides 3 for the fabric, and is also moved, as by cams, to move the needles upward so as to pass the loops on to the loopers 9, which are fixed. The loops 8 pass up the loopers as the fabric 2 is fed, and are served by rotary cutters 10 working in grooves in the loopers. According to the Provisional Specification, the loopers may be moved towards the needles to pick up the loops. Arrangements may be made for suspending the needle operation when desired or at pre-determined intervals, to leave untufted portions of the fabric, to facilitate cutting of the latter. A backing may be attached to the tufted fabrics, by adhesive or otherwise, to secure the loops.
