601,319. Vacuum closures. BLONDEL, F. L. Aug. 13, 1945, No. 20809. Convention date, July 18, 1944. [Class 125(iii)] A vacuum closure for a preserving jar, of the type in which a yielding packing is compressed against a bearing surface by the lower edge of the lid, is characterised in that the packing comprises a rubber ring 3 other than the conventional flat ring, and preferably of round cross-section, located between two parallel annular surfaces 10, 11 rigid with the jar 1 and lid 5 respectively, at least one of said surfaces being formed with a series of stops 9 whereby the expansion of rings 3 is limited. As shown, surfaces 10 and 11 are plane and may be rough cast, surface 10 alone carries projections 9 around its periphery, and surface 11 constitutes the top face of a flange 2, the lower side of which is engaged by the usual spring clip 6 during sterilisation. The round-section packing ring 3 is provided with an outstanding lug which can be pulled to deform the packing and destroy the vacuum. Surfaces 10, 11 instead of being plane, may be similarly oblique, concave or convex, provided they are milled instead of rough cast. The packing ring may alternatively have an oval or polygonal cross-section.
