[Class 68 (ii)] A sluice gate or the like is suspended from a gantry which spans the water channel and is operated by jacks on the banks, the gate being of the same contour as the channel whereby a water seal is effected by staunching carried on the edges of the gate. The channel bed 1, formed of concrete or masonry &c. conforms to the natural shape of the channel. Each jack comprises embedded pillars 3 encased by sliding cylinders 4 which are raised by fluid supplied under pressure through the pipes 6. The cylinders 4 carry the gantry 10 which is formed of two parallel main girders 11 having cross girders 12, ties and braces 13 secured thereto. The girders 11 are joined together at their ends by apertured cross-heads 17, which engage the cylinders 4 adjacent to removable flanges 9 on the cylinders. The vertical brackets 18 secured at each end of the gantry to the girders 11 are provided with two-piece collars 19 which are clamped around the cylinders 4. A decking of planks is provided on the gantry and the operating mechanism for the jacks, such as pumps &c., is carried on the gantry under the housing 16. The sluice gate, suspended from the cross girders 12 by means of the inclined braces 21, comprises a framework of channel section joists 22, 22a, 22b covered on the water retaining side by a metal or the like skin 23. The joint 22 is bent to form the bottom and side edges of the gate, conforming to the shape and size of the channel and along the edges is secured an inverted channel member 25 carrying a staunching strip 24 of rubber or the like. Means may be provided to maintain the gate in a raised position without maintaining the fluid pressure, such as spring-pressed plungers in the collars 19 engaging racks in the pillars 3. Such means may be provided with an automatic switch-off for the power supplying the fluid pressure. For heavy gates additional pillars may be built alongside the hydraulic jacks and be engaged by extensions formed on the crossheads.
