Abstract
Vinyl acetate is polymerized in aqueous emulsion which is heated, under non-turbulent conditions and under substantially atmopheric pressure, to a temperature continually maintained below 50 DEG C. With concentrations of 30-60 per cent of the monomer apparatus having a large cooling surface to volume ratio is used, e.g. tubular reaction vessels, a coil submerged in a bath or multi-tubular condensers. Catalysts such as hydrogen peroxide, ammonium persulphate, lauryl peroxide, crotonyl peroxide or hexhydrobenzoyl peroxide, accelerators such as sodium bicarbonate or carbonate, sodium borate, sodium acetate, ammonium acetate, zinc or magnesium oxide, emulsifiers such as the sodium salt of the sulphonate of di-octyl succinic esters, soaps, higher alkyl sulphonates, cetyl and stearyl alcohols and the sodium and trimethanlamine salts of the sulphates thereof, and regulators such as cetyl mercaptan and aldehydes such as acet-, butyr-and propion-aldehydes, may be added.
