Abstract
600,875. Toasters. OVER, J. J. Oct. 26, 1945, No. 28321. [Class 28(i)] Bread slices placed in a frame 31 are depressed into toasting position between the heating elements 30 by manual depression of a vertical cylinder 20 and are held in this position by the lower end of. a pawl 27, pressed out by a spring 29, to engage the end of the frame. This depression of the cylinder also actuates the plunger 34 and its switch 33 to switch on the current. After the cylinder 20 is depressed towards its fixed piston 18, and on release of the cylinder the coil spring 21 begins to force it upwards so that air flows in slowly through the adjustable valve 24, the whole acting as a dashpot in co-operation with the piston 18. At the top of its rise the lower end of the cylinder 20 frees the pawl 27 so that its lower end pressed out by spring 29 releases the frame 31 so that the spring 15 raises the toast frame out of heating position. The time for toasting is adjustable by setting the valve 24 to the required release. The apparatus can also be actuated through an oil-dashpot arrangement with pressure oil passing from one side of the piston to the other through an adjustable leak valve. Since the cylinder 20 adjoins the heating element the rate of leak and toasting period will be compensated for in some degree in accordance with the heat applied to the toast. The apparatus may be designed to accommodate one or more slices of toast.
