In an electric bread toaster wherein slices of bread are supported on a spring-loaded platform 17 movement of which by associated handles 127 to the toasting position, that is with the bottom of a slot 126 in a slide 121 rigid with the platform 17 engaging under a recess 23 of an adjustable pawl 110, automatically switches on the heating current, tensions the loading springs A of said platform, and springloads clockwork mechanism 25 through a rack rod 26 which is adapted, after a predetermined interval of time, to actuate the pawl 110 through a connecting rod 119 to release the platform and permit the toaster to be restored to its original condition, the said rod 119 is fitted with a temperaturesensitive device 133, preferably a bimetallic strip, to counteract an abnormal rise in temperature of the toaster due to continued use. As shown the end of the rod 119 is slotted at 120 to engage a pin 116 on the pawl 110 and the latter is tripped when the free end of the strip 133 forcibly contacts said pin. The pawl 110, which is pivoted at 114 to a pivoted lever 113, is set by a cam 104 rotatable by a control knob 107, and it may be tripped manually by a rod 108. The clockwork mechanism 25 is loaded by springs 132 disposed between a pin 118 on the rack rod 26 and the bottom of a spring-controlled slide 128 upon downward movement of the latter which is effected by the handles 127; the handles 127 project through slots 129 in the slide 128 and engage the lower ends of said slots before the platform 17 reaches the toasting position.
