Class 38(5) [Also in Group VI] In an electric toaster (see Group VI) having an electric motor to drive the toast carriage to its toasting position and time the toasting, toasting is initiated when the circuit to the motor and heating elements is closed by a conducting bridging member 43 engaging contacts 38, 41. Bridging member 43 is carried'by an arm 44 secured to a bracket 45 mounted on the base of the toaster. A link 46 is pivoted on bracket 45 having, at its lower end, a roller 48 and being pivoted at its upper end to a bell crank lever 37 operated by portion 35 so that on pressing portion 35 down, Fig. 3, roller 48 engages arm 44 to cause member 43 to engage contacts 38, 41. When the carriage reaches toasting position a projection 50 on the carriage engages the end 51 of bell crank lever 37 to disengage roller 48, Fig. 4, and, at the same time, a depending member 49 on the toasting carriage engages the outer'end of arm 44 to retain member 43 in position on contacts 38, 41. When the carriage reaches its toasting position, the drive from the motor is disconnected and the timing gear is connected to gearing driven by the motor. After a predetermined time a pin on the timing gear causes the carriage to be released and hence member 49 is removed to allow member 43 to rise and open the circuit. A bimetallic strip is arranged to reduce the toasting time as the toaster heats up.
