Abstract
517,220. Electric igniters. SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES), Ltd., S., and RUSSELL, V. J. S. July 13, 1938, Nos. 20800/38, and 3279/39. [Class 75 (iii)] In a cigar or like lighter of the kind in which an electrically heated element is disengaged from its contacts when hot by a thermostatic device, one at least of the contacts consists of a bimetallic element maintaining or increasing its pressure on the contact of the heated element until release is effected. In the apparatus shown the .resistance element 19 is carried by a metal rod 18 attached to a moulded insulating member 13 which is slidable against the resistance of a spring 20 in an outer member 12 of moulded insulating material. The. member 12 has a grooved metal cap 14 and is detachably secured in a metal casing 10 by tongues 16. When the member 13 is pressed inwardly the resistance 19 is gripped by bimetallic detents 23 in contact with bimetallic contacts 24, thereby completing the circuit from a lead 25 through the resistance to the casing. As the resistance heats up the pressure of the contacts 24 increases while the detents 23 move outwardly until the resistance is released. The member 13 is then rapidly moved outwards by the spring 20. The part 26 of the member 13 projecting beyond the member 12 when the resistance is being heated is white while the remainder is red to afford an indication of the disconnection of the heated element. Ordinarily spring detents may be substituted for the bimetallic detents 23.
