Abstract

600,509. Elastic-fluid turbines. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. March 9, 1945, No. 5897. Convention date, March 10. 1944. [Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] An Internal-combustion engine power gas producer plant has a blow-off valve for the power gas and a device which varies the closing force acting on the blow-off valve in accordance with a service value of the plant in such a way that at least within a part of the working range of the gas consumer this closing force lies by an adjustable amount above the force tending to open the blow-off valve due to the pressure of the power gas thereon. By " service value " is meant some value which varies in accordance with changes in operation or output of the plant, e.g. the speed of a turbine driven by the power gas. In the plant shown, free piston gas generators 1, 2 supply combustion products through shut-off valves 12, 13 to a main 16 and blow-off valves 18, 19 are provided. The closing force on the blow-off valves is controlled by the governor of a turbine 17 driven by the combustion products in such a way that the closing force is normally slightly above the force due to the combustion products tending to open the valve. As shown, the blow-off valves are controlled by springs 20, 21 acted on by members 22, 23 carried by levers 24, 25. The pressure on the spring can be varied by hand by adjusting screws 28, 29 which vary the position of pivots 26, 27 of the levers. Automatic variation of the load on the springs is obtained by cams 32, 33 worked by the governor 36, of the turbine normally to keep the closing force above the opening force due to the pressure of the combustion products. If it is desired to cut out one of the generators, this is done by closing a cut-out valve 12 or 13. Since the load closing the blow-off valve is only slightly above the load tending to open the valve, as soon as the cut-out valve is closed, the pressure rises sufficiently to open the blow-off valve and prevent stalling of the generator. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the governor acts through a relay device. The construction shown in this Figure is the same as that in Fig. 1 of Specification 600,510, and further details are given in the abridgment of this Specification. The same Figure also shows an arrangement for closing a cut-out valve in the event of the stopping of a gas producer. The air supply to the compressors of the gas generators may be supercharged preferably by a rotary compressor driven by a gas turbine driven by the products produced in the plant. The invention is not restricted to free piston gas generators, but may be applied to other internal-combustion gas generators. There may be one only blowoff valve for a number of generators or each generator may have one in addition to a main blow-off valve .for a plant. The manner of switching in a gas producer is described. Specification 455,358 also is referred to.
