Abstract

600,235. Hedge cutters. HILLHOUSE, J. P., and ELLINGHOUSE, H. A. F. Dec. 11, 1945, No. 33409. [Class 6(ii)] This invention relates to power-driven hedge cutters of the type usually connected through a flexible shaft to a source of power and having means for automatically declutching the drive to the reciprocating blades in the event of an overload. On a notched blade 1 with V-shaped cutting edges a similar blade 5 is reciprocably mounted. Coupled to an internal-combustion engine is a flexible shaft 9 connected to one end of a shaft 7 on which is mounted a sleeve member 15 splined to rotate with the shaft. Wide-angled clutch teeth on the sleeve 15 are held in engagement with similar teeth 13 on a worm 11, journalled on the shaft 7, by a spring 17 located between the sleeve 15 and a bearing 19. The worm 11 engages with a worm-wheel 21 from which extends a crank pin 23 fitting a yoke 25 to drive the notched blade 5. The clutch member may be provided with trigger means of control. Alternative means are provided for connecting the crank pin 23 to the notched blade 5.
