Abstract

600,058. Photographic emulsions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Jan. 10, 1946, No. 925. Convention date, Jan. 10; 1945. [Class 98 (ii)] A photographic light sensitive colloid silver halide emulsion or an element with at least one layer of such contains a polyglycol of molecular weight of 400 or more. The polyglycols are made by removal of water from glycols and by reaction of oxides, such as ethylene, propylene and butylene oxides with ethylene or diethylene glycol. Compounds having the formula HOCH2 CH2O(CH2CH20)nCH2CH2OH where n is 7 to 200 or more may be used and the preferred molecular weights are 1500 to 8000. They may be incorporated with the emulsion prior to coating or may be applied after coating. They increase the sensitivity of the emulsions over the whole range of the spectrum, and may be used in conjunction with " sulphur " sensitisers and " optical " sensitisers such as dyes. Gelatin or other specified colloid binders are used. The eight examples show increase in relative speed of 50 per cent or more, with little change in gamma and fog.
