Abstract

600,032. Gear-cutting. JOHNSON, R. L. June 19, 1945, No. 15591. [Class 83 (iii)] Gear teeth or splines in a blank are cut by a reciprocating tool holder in which cutting-tools are mounted in ring formation round the periphery of the blank and fed radially step-by-step between cutting-strokes by an axially adjustable tapered sleeve. The blank 30 is secured on a shaft 35 held in a pedestal 33 attached to a table 38 above which the reciprocating cutting mechanism is mounted in a cylinder 34 carried in a column 44 ; an alignment ring 24 ensures alignment of the pedestal 33 and cylinder 34. Inside the cylinder a piston 4 is joined to a connecting- rod 22 by a gudgeon pin 7 and is interconnected with a tapered sleeve 6 by a coupling-ring 5 having screw-threads of opposite hand and a toothed flange engaging a gear 14 on a splined shaft 16 driven by the main driving means. Another sleeve 3 is slidable within the piston, coupling ring and tapered sleeve and carries a detachable tool holder 2 with cutting- tools 1. The sleeve is connected by studs 31 to a yoke 11 bearing on a cam 10 rotated by gearing 12, 13 from a splined shaft 40 also driven from the main driving means. In operation, during a cutting-stroke, the sleeve 3 bears - against the underside of the piston 4 and the tools 1 are held against the tapered sleeve by springs 27. On the return stroke, the cam 10 has been rotated so as to allow the sleeve 3 to descend relatively to the piston, allowing the tools to retract to relieve them from unnecessary wear, and before the next cutting-stroke the sleeve 6 is advanced by the rotation of the ring 5 by the shaft 16 to apply cut. When the desired depth of cut has been made, a key 46 on the sleeve 6 strikes a bellcrank lever 51 on a cut-out device adjustably mounted on the cylinder 34 and may operate a reversing switch. The cylinder 34, which may be counter-balanced, is then lifted by means of the rack 42 and pinion 43 so that a fresh work-piece can be loaded. A wedge 45 is provided for adjusting the working clearance of tenons on the cylinders within slots on the column 44. Cutting oil may be contained in the base and pumped through the pedestal to the work. The Provisional Specification describes a tool-holding sleeve having a flange loosely engaging an annular recess in the lower end of the piston to allow self-adjustment with respect to the work-piece and tapered sleeve.
