Abstract

1,238,453. Morticing machine. RYE ENG. WORKS (HIGH WYCOMBE) Ltd., and A. F. HAWES. 17 Oct., 1968 [24 Oct., 1967], No. 48369/67. Heading B5L. [Also in Division B3] A machine for cutting mortices or slots or for drilling holes comprises a spindle 10 provided with tool holding means such as a chuck 11, a slide 15 carrying the spindle 10 for rotation therein, and mounted on a machine frame 24 for reciprocatory movement thereon transverse to the spindle axis, the spindle 10 also being movable axially in the slide 15, means for effecting axial movement of the spindle, and a motor 30 which is drivably connected by a first belt drive 32 to the spindle 10 which permits axial movement of the spindle, and is drivably connected by a second belt drive 37 to a crank, rotation of the crank by the motor effecting the reciprocatory movement of the slide 15. As described the spindle 10 is carried by a sleeve 14 provided with a piston 16 slidable within a cylinder 18 in the slide 15, the piston 16 and hence spindle 10 being movable by pressure fluid applied via ports 19, 20. The motor 30 acts via pulley 31 and the belt 32 to rotate the spindle 10, and acts via the belt 37 and reduction gearing to rotate a shaft 39 carrying a crank pin 40 interengaging with a slipper 42 mounted in a slot 44 in the slide 15 to reciprocate the slide. The extent of reciprocation of the slide is adjusted by adjustment of the position of the pin 40 and may be reduced to zero when the machine is used for drilling. The extent of axial movement of the spindle is controlled by an adjustable stop nut, not shown. A cylindrical portion 25 of the machine frame 24 is mounted within a clamp ring, not shown, so that the line of slide reciprocation can be varied. The clamp ring may be carried on a mounting bracket slidable in the axial direction of the spindle on a machine bed.
