Abstract

598,994. Making metal mesh screens. HOLMAN, H. E. Aug. 29, 1945, No. 22273. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XL] Punchingand embossing dies ; perforating.- In a method of making 'a metal mesh screen, suitable for use in cathode-ray tubes used for television transmission, a matrix is provided having grooves corresponding to the pattern of the mesh and a thin sheet of metal to form the mesh is pressed against the matrix by a second matrix formed with ridges corresponding to the grooves so as to force the metal of the sheet into the grooves, the metal between the grooves being subsequently removed to form the mesh. In a modification, the second matrix is replaced by a compressible pad, the first matrix having flat areas between the grooves. A wax plate is ruled in two directions at right angles with 200 V-shaped grooves per inch, 0.003 inches deep. The plate is rendered conducting by a film of graphite and a master plate is obtained by electro-deposition in known manner. From this is produced a positive matrix 1 having grooves 3. A negative matrix 2 is formed by electro-deposition on the matrix 1, the apices of the projections 4 being removed by lapping. Matrix 1 may be of copper and matrix 2 of nickel or of copper coated with nickel or chromium. A sheet of aluminium about 0.003 inch thick is pressed between the matrices, so that metal of the sheet is forced into the grooves 3 as shown in Fig. 3. The matrix 2 is stripped off and if the portions 7 of the plate between the grooves have not been completely severed, they are removed by lapping. The matrix 1 is then removed by a chemical solvent leaving a metal mesh screen of aluminium. When the second matrix is replaced by a compressible pad, the pad may comprise watersaturated bristol board or like material. Specifications 458,675 and 533,213, [Group XL], are referred to.
