598,383. Aircraft wheel brakes. OLAER PATENT CO., and COMPAGNIE GENERALE POUR L'EQUIPEMENT AERONAUTIQUE. July 4, 1945, No. 17090. Convention date, April 7, 1944. [Class 4] A brake system for the landing wheels of an aircraft comprises an aerodynamic device acting on control means such as a regulating valve to limit the maximum applicable braking force in accordance with the lift acting on the aircraft or the speed of the aircraft. As shown applied to a hydraulic brake system, the wheel brakes 5, 6 are operated from a pressure accumulator 13 through valves 9, 10 controlled by pedals 11, 12. A pressure-regulating valve 18 is interposed between the accumulator and the valves 9, 10 and is controlled by a vane 2. mounted on a parallelogram linkage 20, 21, 22 The loading per unit area and incidence of the vane are arranged to be the same as the wing loading and incidence of the aeroplane so that the position of the control member 19 of the valve corresponds to the nett weight on the wheels (weight minus lift) and the maximum braking force which may be applied to the wheels is limited accordingly. The member 19 may, alternatively, be operated by a device, such as a Pitot tube, responsive to the speed of the aeroplane.
