Abstract

598,362. Goggles. MAURER, F. W. Jan. 19, 1945, No. 1594. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1943. [Class 97 (i)] A goggle, which encloses the nose and eyes of a wearer but leaves the mouth exposed, has a frame with a lens holding rim and rearwardly extending resilient portions defining an eye chamber, an opening in the frame communicating with the outer atmosphere, and a nose chamber formed on the frame and into which air from the eye chamber flows through a oneway valve. When the wearer exhales, the air may pass to the outer atmosphere via another one-way valve. As shown, the goggle frame 10, Fig. 1, moulded as of rubber and having its upper and lower portions spaced apart by a web 24, holds a lens 20 and has portions 12, 14, Fig. 2, so that the arrangement defines an eye chamber. Inhaled air enters through apertures in the ports 14 and is diffused into the eye chamber by a cloth-26 covering each aperture. The air passes through apertures in a lip 16 to a chamber 36 formed by a shield 35 as of rubber cemented to the frame 10 and spaced from the outer wall of the nose chamber 15 by lugs 38. In this wall is mounted a valve 50 made as of rubber, the stem 46 of which is slidable in a hub 45 carrying radial ribs 42 defining apertures 44, the valve allowing air to be inhaled into the nose chamber only. Air exhaled into the nose chamber passes into the outer atmosphere through a similar one-way valve 60 having a rim 62 to deflect the exhaled air. The lower port of the nose chamber 15 may, however, be sealed, the wearer then having to exhale through his mouth. The goggles may be held on the wearer's head by a strap engaging slots 65, lined with grommets 66, in the lens 20.
