Abstract
597,900. Suspending lamps. ENGINEERING & LIGHTING EQUIPMENT CO., Ltd, BIRD, W., and DOWDELL, A. T. May 3, 1945, No. 11209. [Class 78(v)] In an electrical contact device for lamps or the like of the type having upper and lower parts, the upper part being provided with a hook-like suspension member rigidly mounted on an overhead support and the lower part being suspended from a rope and adapted to be raised into engagement with the hook member and suspended therefrom, electrical contact between the two parts being effected automatically during the lifting movement, the projecting member on the lower part comprises a lever K which is pivotally mounted on a, bracket K<1> on the lower part and has its foot supported by a spring or springs M whereby it is normally held in a position slightly inclined to the vertical. The upper fixed member of . the suspensionÀcomprises a plate F on which are mounted electrical contacts H,. a downwardly projecting central portion G together with a guide portion R having a slot S and provided with a projection P and a recessed cam Q. The lever K is pivoted on a hanging portion which is-provided with a central guide 0 and electrical contacts H1. A wire rope B pulls the guide 0 into the portion G and a, projection L on the hanging part enters the slot S and so positions the two portions that electrical contact is made and the pivoted arm K is brought into contact with the lower extremity of the cam Q. Further movement of the lower portion in an upward direction causes the lever K to travel round the surface of the cam Q until it is stopped by the projection P, the hanging portion is then lowered and the arm K is guided into a recess in the cam Q which takes the whole weight of the suspended article. A fresh upward movement causes the top of the arm K to pass on the other side of the stop P and a lowering movement causes it to ride over the top face of the cam Q with complete release of the device.
