[Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Groups VIII and XXXVIII] Apparatus for indicating, grading or sorting according to the minimum thickness of an article comprises means for measuring the changes in thickness of the -article and translating them into variations of an electrical value, only the changes corresponding to decreases in thickness being transmitted to the grading device. Fig. 1 shows a leather blank S which is fed through a measuring device M to a grading and skiving device G. The blank passes through feeding rolls to two pairs of calipering rolls, one on each side of the blank, one of which is shown 2, 2a, the lower roll being fixed and the upper moving a spindle 105 up and down according to changes of thickness. The blank passes from the measuring device and is conveyed to the grading device where it passes between skiving rolls 4, 4a. The position of roll 4 has been adjusted by bar 63 and wedges 65, 66 moved by an electric motor 500 controlled through an electrical correspondence control system (see Group XXXVIII) from spindle 105 so that the blank is skived by a knife 5 to a uniform thickness corresponding to its thinnest portion. When the blank leaves the rolls, a link 305 descends to operate switch 621 to initiate the return of motor 500 to an initial position. An electrical instrument 480 indicates the minimum detected thickness of the blank. Specification 598,297 is referred to.
