Abstract
597,781. Facilitating changing speed; claw clutches. CROSSLEY MOTORS, Ltd., and OWEN, W. Aug. 27, 1945, No. 21924. [Class 80 (ii)] To permit gear shifts with both engine and vehicle in motion in a conventional change-speed gear driven by a fluid coupling or torque converter, the latter drives the input shaft of the change-speed gear through a frictionally synchronised claw clutch e, f which can only be disengaged when the accelerator pedal is released, so that a shift can only be made when the engine is idling. The clutch is operated with or without fluid pressure assistance through a rockshaft p which can only be turned for disengagement when, by release of the accelerator pedal t a recess u in a rod s linked thereto registers with a recess (not shown in Fig. 3) in the rockshaft p. In operation a pedal secured to the rockshaft p is fully depressed first to disengage the axially toothed claw-clutch members e, f, then to engage friction cones j, d, on the clutch members to replace the positive drive by a frictional one. The pedal is then eased intermittently until the change-speed gear can be neutralised and a shift made, whereupon the pedal is released to permit synchronised re - engagement of the claw clutch.
