Abstract
597,557. Fastenings. DEMPSTER BROS., Inc. Aug. 22, 1945, No. 21517. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1944. [Class 44] [Also in Groups XXX and XXXII] A fastening releasably holds a body, container or the like on a support on a vehicle which has elevating mechanism for moving the body, the fastening being operated solely by the elevating mechanism. As shown, a removable body 11 has near its base an horizontal flange 12 which seats on a support 10 on a vehicle, the flange being provided by a channel iron 13 attached to the underside of the body 11. Rotatably mounted at 15 on the underside of the support 10 is a member 16 having a hooked extension 17 ;. also mounted beneath the support 10 are two vertically aligned studs 21, which are received in a slot 23 in a member 22 which projects upwardly through a slot in the support 10, so that its upper end 25 can be engaged by the lower end of the elevating mechanism 14. The member 22 is normally urged upwards, to the limit permitted by the lower stud 21, by a coil spring 26, one end of which is attached to the member 22, the other end being attached to a fixed member 28 on the support 10. Thus, when the elevating mechanism 14 lowers the body 11, its lower extremity engages the upper end 25 of the member 22 which is then moved downwards, causing the member 16, through the co-opera. tion of a pin 24 on the member 22 with a slot 20 in the member 16, to rotate anti-clockwise so that its hooked extension 17 passes through a slot 19 in the support 10 and engages the flange 12 of the body 11. When the body 11 is to be removed, the upward movement of the lower extremity of the elevating mechanism 14 results in the upward movement of the member 22, causing the member 16 to rotate clockwise so that its hooked extension 17 is withdrawn through the slot 19 and the body 11 can be moved. More than one locking device 17 may be used ; they may be disposed in transverse alignment with respect to the support 10 on the vehicle, so that all are operated simultaneously by the elevating mechanism 14, either a single flange 12 or separate flanges for each locking device being provided transversely of the removable body 11.
