Abstract

597,544. Rotary engines and compressors. CHAPMAN, C. W. Aug. 22, 1945, No. 21482. [Class 110 (ii)] The engine has an eccentric rotor 2, on a shaft 5 which is arranged concentrically within a working-chamber 21 and hinged abutments 22 whose movements are controlled by links 32, slippers 35, and an adjustable eccentric 36 on the shaft 5. Small clearances are arranged between the rotor and the tips 22a of the abutments. For a compressor, gas enters a space 13 from an inlet 20 by way of spaces 14, 15 and is delivered through a port 8 into a space 9 leading to outlet chambers 16, 19. The ends of the rotor run with small clearances between them and the cylinder walls, or lightlyrubbing seals may be provided. Packing pieces 27, for the abutments, may also be provided. Balancing means for the rotor and shaft comprise masses 47 and 47a. Abutment spindles 23 are hollow with a spring on each which presses the spindle towards a chamber 28. Split bosses 33 allow for adjustment of the abutments. The eccentric 36 may be angularly adjusted through an eccentric 40a and slot 42.
