Abstract

Two parts by weight of casein and 1 to 3 parts by weight of urea, thiourea, guanidine, biuret, cyanamide, dicyandiamide or the like are condensed with a quantity of formaldehyde sufficient to harden the casein and also to form a carbamide resin, and the condensation is continued until a highly viscous mass is formed. The mass is then spun into fibres by known dry, or wet, spinning methods, and hardened by means of a heat treatment. Examples are given using spinning masses obtained by condensing formaldehyde with an aqueous solution containing (1) acid casein, borax, urea and thiourea; (2) rennet casein, acid casein, caustic soda, boric acid, urea and thiourea; (3) acid casein, sodium hydroxide, urea and melamine or dicyandiamide; (4) casein, triethanolamine, urea and thiourea, and (5) casein, sodium hydroxide, and urea.
