Abstract

597,215. Making hose fittings ; cupping. WEATHERHEAD CO. April 17, 1944, No. 7055. Convention date, April 27, 1943. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVIII] The body of a hose end fitting is made by boring a tubular blank up to its head B to a smaller diameter than the external diameter of the hose, taper threading the exterior wall of the blank to a point spaced from the head, slotting the blank from its open end to the head, and expanding the threaded parts of the slotted blank radially whilst retaining its cylindrical formation. The head B is held in a recess 20 in a split die 21, and a punch 30 is forced into the blank, opening the segments as shown until the shoulder 25 on the die is engaged by a shoulder 26 on the blank formed by cutting an external annular groove 11, Further progress of the punch curves the necks 12 of the segments outwardly, and reaction between the shoulders 25, 26 causes the threaded portions of the blank to be brought to cylindrical form. The internal surfaces of the segments are curved transversely on an arc of shorter radius than that of the exterior of the hose. The necks 12 of the segments may be flattened to increase elasticity by projections 30a on the punch co-operating with similar formations in the die:
