Abstract
<PICT:0596809/III/1> Milk or other liquid is continuously fed in a thin film and the film submitted in a closed chamber to intra-red radiation from, for example, incandescent lamps, sodium vapour lamps or neon lamps. With the apparatus of Fig. 1 the liquid from the constant level vessel 15 is allowed to flow by way of the valve 17 into the annular chamber 7 formed by the partition 6 in the vertical tank 1, and in a thin layer from the chamber 7 down the walls of an infra-red lamp 12, the flow being regulated by a wick-like stuffing 16 in the annular space 9. The liquid falls from the lamp walls on to the conical partition 22, from which it is directed into a spiral channel 23 in the bottom of the tank 1. The liquid leaving the tank 1 is cooled by the heat exchanger 24. With the apparatus of Fig. 2, the radiation of infra-red lamps 29 is directed on to the wall 30 over which flows a film of the liquid from the annular channel 31 containing a circular helical spring having its coils in close contact. With the apparatus of Fig. 4 the liquid from a supply of constant level Y-Y is taken up on the curved surface 53 of the revolving drum 51, is subjected to infra-red radiation from the lamps 50, flows to the collector <PICT:0596809/III/2> <PICT:0596809/III/3> <PICT:0596809/III/4> <PICT:0596809/III/5> 531, and drips therefrom into a cup 54. With the apparatus of Fig. 5a, the liquid, fed through the conduits 67 and 69 to an annular outlet 63, is projected along the walls of a rotating basin 62, is subjected to infra-red radiation from the lamps 64, overflows at the periphery of the basin 62, and is discharged through the conduit 66. With the apparatus of Fig. 6 the liquid is introduced into an annular channel 81 rotating on the shaft 82 which also supports the infra-red lamps 84. The liquid is sprinkled, from the holes 86 in the channel 81, against the cylindrical wall 87. On falling from the wall 87 the liquid collects in the channel 90 and flows therefrom by way of the annular deflector 91 on to the outer walls 98 of a cooler in the chamber R which is subjected to reduced pressure by evacuation through the opening 107.
