Abstract
596,455. Locomotive sand boxes. SOLER, J. L. May 23, 1945, No. 12888. Convention date, May 30, 1944. [Class 103 (iii)] A sand box for a locomotive or other rail vehicle comprises a container 1 mounted above the boiler, having an inclined base forming a hopper from which delivery pipes 2, 3 extend to the rails, each ending in a nozzle 4, Fig. 5. Delivery of sand is controlled by a rod 8 and lever 7 which operate a rod 16 and lever 18 to raise a valve 20. The sand is loosened by movement of the arms 17, 27. Compression of the sand in the bottom of the container is prevented by a perforated partition 25. The nozzle 4 may be of rubber, and is provided with a water inlet pipe 33 to moisten the sand to secure adhesion to the rail. To ensure the correct location of the nozzle when the vehicle is on a curve, two sections of the pipe 2 are capable of rotation at-the junction 37, Fig. 6. The nozzle section is connected by a crossbar 51 to a longitudinal rod 45 pivoted at 52 to the bogie, and at 47 to the locomotive frame.
