Abstract

596,132. Welding. MALLORY METALLURGICAL PRODUCTS, Ltd., and TUCKER, N. A. July 20, 1945, No. 18612. [Class 83 (iv)] A spot welding electrode for operating on work difficult of access, such as internal corners or internal angles, has its Operative end on one side of the lontidudinal axis formed with one or more flat faces inclined to the said axis in the direction of the tip of the electrode. The electrode 1, Fig. 2, which is presented at an incline to the work, either down hand or up hand, has one side of its end 2 formed with a pair of flat faces 5, which are inclined to the axis of the electrode and are also inclined away from each other. The angle of inclination of the faces relatively to one another is determined by the relief angle X which each face in plan makes with a plane intersecting at right angles at this side, the plane in which lies the electrode axis; This angle may vary from 0 to 60 degrees, an angle of 30 degrees being suitable for general purposes. With an angle of 0 degrees the two flat inclined faces become a single flat face, such an electrode being suitable for straight seams along internal angles with the electrode presented at an angle. Between the two flat faces an additional narrow flat face inclined to the electrode axis and preferably at right .angles to the plane of the tip 3 and with a relief .angle of 0 degrees may be provided. The other side of the end may be shaped to coincide with the surface of a cone lying at an angle to the plane of the tip 3; the tip being either circular or elliptical and inclined to the electrode axis. Instead of coning the end of the electrode, it may be simply cut across at an angle to the axis to provide the tip which may be of part elliptical form. A curved ended electrode, Fig. 5, may have an end with a tip 7 at right angles to the axis of the part 1, a sloping conical part, 8, inclined flat faces 9 and an additional narrow flat face 10 arranged. at right angles to the plane of the tip.
