Abstract

595,971. Bearings. JENSON, G., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 11, 1945, No. 17767. [Class 12 (i)] A shaft bearing comprises a plurality of ball or roller bearings 2, 3 with axial thrust equally distributed by the outer races 2b, 3b being respectively secured on nested concentric sleeves 9, 11 which extend axially thereby to space radially extending end flanges 9a, 11a provided thereon, such end flanges 9a, 11a having axially extending rim flanges 9b, 11b nesting over each other with the ends 9c, 11c of such rim flanges held in butting relationship to an end face 4a of of the housing 4 for the multiple bearing. Axial thrust is equally spread over the bearing's by the shaft, with the plurality of bearings 2, 3 properly secured thereon by the locking rings 5, 6 and spacing ring 7, being initially subjected to an end thrust equal to the normal working thrust and balanced by equal fractional thrusts applied to each of the rim flanges 9b, 11b, the rim flanges in this position being drilled to provide dowel holes 9d, 11d whereby these rim flanges can be subsequently correctly positioned for their end faces 9c, 11c to be machined in line for subsequent bolting in butting relationship to the end face 4a of the housing 4.
