Abstract
Shaped bodies, ramming mixtures and mortars, and refractory materials are prepared from non-plastic aggregate particles by forming a dispersion in a liquid medium of a part of the bonding-agent and incorporating this into the aggregate to form a thin covering on the particles, the remainder of the bonding-agent being separately incorporated as a finely divided solid in a subsequent operation. The aggregate which may be of porous or non-porous character is graded to obtain a densely-packed batch under pressure. The bonding-agent may be a single material, two or more materials capable of reacting to form a bonding-agent, or a bonding-material and an adhesive. The bonding-material or the part to be incorporated first, is made into a dispersion or solution with the whole of the water or other tempering liquid and is thoroughly mixed with the aggregate, and after the grains are coated the remainder is mixed in dry, the mixing being accomplished in such a way as not to affect the grading of the aggregate particles. The mixture is then pressed to shape at at least 1000 lbs. per square inch dried and fired. When periclase is to be bonded, the bonding-agent may consist of silica or a correctly-proportioned mixture of silica and magnesia so that a bond of forsterite is produced, and a solution of magnesium chloride is employed as the tempering liquid; preferably volatilized silica is employed. Alternatively, a dispersion of a glue or other glutinous material, or a clay slip may be employed.
