Abstract
595,198. Hooks; swivels. WIRK KALA, O. A. Nov. 22. 1944, No. 23209. [Classes 24 and 89 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] Hooks, for use in cargo handling rigging, have an equalizer block 3, Fig. 3. with two swivels 31 attaching books 5 for the slings 1 at the upper side and a centrally located swivel at the lower, side carrying the cargo hook 4. The seats for the slings in the hooks 5 are curved at 27, Fig. 7, according to the diameter of the sling rope and the curvature is continued round the points of the hooks which terminate in heads 29. The mid plane y of the sling seat is offset as shown. from the axis x of the swivel so that the hooks, when free, tend to set themselves as shown in Fig. 3 with the heads together. The blocks 3 have two side plates connected by bolts 6 with interposed distance pieces. The nuts are sunk in counterbores of the plates and all the parts are shaped to minimize the risk of fouling other ropes or rigging. The nuts 17, 32, Fig. 3, for the swivels seat on washers 18, 34 in counterbores in the hooks and are locked by welding at 171. The heads 10 of the bolts carry trunnions 11. In a modification the bolts pass through holes in the trunnion blocks forming a double swivel. In use one of the hooks 5 may serve for suspending the load and a rope from the other may pass horizontally and round a pulley to swing the load laterally.
