Abstract
594,809. Vacuum coatings. MORGAN, W. L. June 11, 1945, No. 14716. Convention date, June 9, 1944. [Class 93] A pattern coating is produced on a support material by covering a portion of the surface of the material with a metallic stencil, magnetically mounting the stencil in contact with and in predetermined position upon the support material and applying in a vacuum a coating to the exposed part of the surface by deposition. Specified support materials are glass or other siliceous material, plastic, metal and paper and specified coating materials are metals, e.g., aluminium, magnesium fluoride and copper oxide. The coating may be deposited by cathodic sputtering or thermal evaporation. Referring to the drawings, a bell-like casing 11 having a surrounding flange 12 rests upon base 10, and has an exhaust pipe 13 for evacuating air from the casing. Inside the casing is mounted a workpiece supporting frame 14 comprising a back wall 15, side walls 16 and top and bottom walls 17. Guide strips 18 provide a means for supporting a removable workpiece 20. A plurality of horseshoe type permanent magnets 21 are held by bolts and screws 22 in position upon the inner face of the wall 15 and each magnet holds in position upon the workpiece a stencil 23. Alternatively electromagnets 26 supplied with current by cable 27 may be used. The casing is evacuated, filament 29 electrically heated and so thermally evaporates a suitable material previously applied to it. The particles thereof are thrown on to workpiece 20 to provide the coating
