Abstract
594,659. Pulse generating and modulating circuits. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Sept. 13, 1944, No. 17541. Convention date, April 10, 1943. [Class 40 (v)] In a pulse generator a delay line is associated with a thermionic valve, the flow of current in the valve initiating a potential wave which is propagated down the line and reflected to produce at the transmitting end an increased potential to terminate the flow of current in the valve. Coupled coils 11, 12 in the anode and grid circuits of valve 1 ensure rapid increase of current, the line L being connected between the cathode and earth and terminated by a valve 2 which acts as a variable resistance. As the line L discharges through valve 2 the cathode potential falls until valve 1 conducts, the anode current in coil 12 inducing a voltage in coil 11 which is applied to the grid of valve 1 to cause a rapid increase in the anode current. The cathode of valve 1 is driven positive rapidly, a positive wave being sent down line L to the valve 2 which presents a resistance greater than the characteristic impedance of the line L so that the wave is reflected to increase the potential on the cathode of valve 1, thereby cutting off the anode current, the line L discharging through valve 2 to complete a cycle. The coupling coil 13 feeds the pulse produced by the flow of anode current through coil 12, to a pulse amplifier 10 feeding a magnetron 16. To minimize the effects of variations in the supply voltage, the screen grid of valve 2 is fed through a resistance-condenser combination (i, 8 having the same time constant as the combination comprising the condenser C1 and the effective resistance of the screen grid circuit. The screen potential of valve 1 may be stabilized by a neon tube. For pulse modulation purposes, an audioamplifier 3 varies the grid potential of valve 2, the line L being discharged at a greater or lesser rate to vary the interval between pulses.
