Abstract

A material for preventing oxidation of molten magnesium, or alloys thereof with lithium, calcium, barium, and sodium, &c., in a melting pot or in a mould or for putting out burning magnesium comprises 1 1/2 to 4 parts of ammonium bifluoride mixed with one part of boric acid. The resultant liquid should be passed through filter paper and may be sprayed on the surface of a sand or other mould or be mixed with moulding sand, 5 parts to 100 parts of sand, no water or binder being required. To protect magnesium at 900 DEG C., the liquid should be sprayed on to the melt for a few seconds at intervals of a minute or so. The ammonium salt may be dried at 100 DEG C. and the acid at 150 DEG .
