Abstract
594,051. Joints for tubular structural members. FIERZ, H. June 25, 1945, No. 16128. [Class 20(ii)] Tubular struts in frameworks for aircraft, scaffolding, &c., are joined to other structural elements by distorting the tube transversely in the neighbourhood of the joint to produce a cross-section in which in the central portion the tube walls are flat and in close contact while the adjacent marginal portions are bulbed, the flat portion being used for interconnection by rivets for example with the other joint elements such as gusset plates. To produce the desired cross-section-which minimises the weakness caused by the flattening of the tube-the tube 1 is first pressed into a kidney shape, round fillers 3 are then introduced into the marginal portions 4 and the pressing continued to bring the tube walls into contact between the fillers 3. The fillers 3, which may be of round bar when the joint is at the end of a tube, or flexible steel cable when the joint is intermediate the ends, are then withdrawn. The bulbed margins 4 may be wholly to one side of the flat portion as in Fig. 3 or symmetrically disposed when the part to which the tube is connected is sufficiently narrow .to fit between them.
