Abstract

594,024. Coating webs. RUAU, F. F., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. June 11, 1945, No. 14723. [Class 140] An adhesive applying device of the kind in which adhesive is applied through an orifice in a nozzle to a travelling surface comprises an axially rotating nozzle whereby any excess of adhesive is uniformly distributed around the circumference of the operative end of the nozzle. The nozzle may be positively rotated or may be, rotated by a friction device from a continuous travelling surface. A scraper may be provided to scrape the rotating nozzle to remove any adhesive from the periphery thereof. The adhesive may be milled by a device which may comprise a fixed disc 21, Fig. 1, the face of which bears against the face of a rotating disc 22 coupled to rotating nozzle 2 by being clamped between shoulder 8 and the end of part 4 while spring 19 presses the two discs together and seals the joint between the rotating parts and the fixed hollow shaft 17. Each disc has a ring of small holes 23 concentric with its axis, thus as the rotary disc rotates its holes pass over the holes in the fixed disc and the paste passing through is milled. The fixed disc comprises a long shank 24 extending along hole 6 nearly to the nozzle orifice and having one or more flats 25 on its sides to provide passage for the paste. The nozzle comprises two parts 3 and 4 screwed together at 5 while the extremity of the nozzle consists of part 30 screwed to part 3 as so capable of adjustment. A gear 15 is fixed to part 4 by means of which the whole nozzle device is rotated. A diagrammatic arrangement is shown in Fig. 7 for rotating a nozzle by frictional engagement with the web. The web 1 runs in a vertical plane and the nozzle 2 is rotated by a rubber tyred wheel 55 through the gears shown. Figure 6 shows the use of an adjustable scraper 54. Specification 594,010, [Group XXVIII], is referred to.
