Abstract
593,731. Pulse modulation. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 9, 1944, No. 8847. Convention date, July 3, 1942. [Class 40 (v)] In a time-modulated pulse signalling system of the kind described in Specification 592,414, in which signals are conveyed by variation of the time interval between pairs of short pulses, the received pulses are passed through a shaping circuit to a filter designed to pass a narrow band of frequencies centred around an harmonic of the pulse pair periodicity. The narrow received pulses are shaped into wider pulses which are started by either the leading or trailing edge of the received pulse and last for a constant period depending on the shaping circuit. The shaping circuit comprised a multivibrator valve pair V1, V2 with a common cathode resistance 30 and with the anode of valve V1 coupled to the grid of valve V2 through a condenser 33. The normal condition is such that valve V1 is blocked and valve V2 is passing current due to the positive bias from the source B. When the leading edge of a positive pulse is applied to the grid of the valve V1 that valve conducts, its anode voltage falls and the grid of valve V2 falls in voltage sufficiently to block the valve V2, which remains blocked for a period dependent on the time constant of condenser 33 and resistance 34. The shaped impulses are applied to a filter which passes a band of frequencies around an harmonic of the pulse - pair periodicity. The filter output is thus amplitudemodulated and may bo passed to phones &c. through an amplitude detector. A separate message may be transmitted as an amplitude modulation of the pulses.
