Abstract
Sodium-penicillin, characterised by a moisture content less than approximately 2.0 per cent and by high stability, is obtained by subjecting this compound as ordinarily obtained to severe drying conditions, e.g. exposure to high vacuum, in the presence of anhydrous calcium sulphate, magnesium perchlorate, or preferably phosphorus pentoxide, for 24-48 hours at room temperature. In an example: sodium-penicillin solution, obtained by standard methods from culture media carrying selected strains of Penicillium notatum, is frozen and subjected to high vacuum, prior to further drying in a vacuum desiccator over phosphorus pentoxide until the moisture content of the salt falls to about 0.5-1.3 per cent.
