[Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXV] A method of securing closure or other component in a circular orifice comprises positioning over the orifice a ring or washer having an overall diameter greater than that of the orifice and pressing by means of a punch so that the material of the ring is rotated about its neutral axis and at the same time is forced into the orifice with an interference fit. A steel ring 3 of square cross-section with its sides at an angle of forty-five degrees to the longitudinal axis is placed on top of a cylindrical cavity 2 of less diameter in a member 1. The action of a punch 4 is to rotate the metal of the ring about the neutral axis and also force the ring into the cavity where it remains as an interference fit and serves to retain a closure disc previously placed in the cavity. The invention is also shown applied to the closing of the near end of a tracer cavity 6 in a member 7 adapted to be screwed into the base of an armour-piercing projectile. The mouth of the cavity is formed with a shoulder 9 against which bears a choke washer 8. A brass cup-shaped sealing member 10 is then pressed firmly against the walls of the orifice by a ring or washer 3 forced into the opening in the manner already described. The washer 8 may be omitted, in which case the sealing cup would bear on the shoulder 9. The ratio of the overall diameter of the ring to the diameter of the orifice to be closed is approximately 1.077 and the length of a side of the washer is approximately one-eighth of the diameter of the orifice.
