592,786. Root crop harvesters. SILK, O. A..June 4, 1945, No. 13969. [Class 6 (iii)] Relates to means for separating root crops from associated weeds and earth. According to the invention, said means comprises the combination of a conveyer d, an abutment formed for instance by the rear side of the hood r and a unidirectionally movable grid f. In operation, roots are extracted by a pair of rotary ploughs b, then passed to an endless conveyer c from whence they are elevated by the conveyer d, the upper end of which is enclosed by the hood r, and flung against the abutment. They rebound on to the grid f and pass down it whilst the detached weeds are carried in the opposite direction over its top. The moving parts are driven by chain and sprocket mechanisms e and k. The grid consists of a pair of endless parallel chains interconnected by transverse rods.
