Abstract

Surfaces, particularly metal surfaces, are coated with a metal or material of high melting point (i.e. above 2700 DEG C.) such as the carbides of tungsten, tantalum, titanium, zirconium, by spraying from a metallizing gun-the powdered high melting point material forming a core in a tube of a comparatively low melting point (i.e. below 1750 DEG C.) metal such as steel, copper, brass. The tube is fed to the gun in the usual manner, and the issuing stream, a mixture of molten metal and high melting point powder, impinges on the surface to be coated, the powder being retained thereon by the molten metal which coats the particles. Surfaces mentioned are armour plate, motor cylinders and valves.
