Abstract

A non-aqueous drilling fluid for use in well-drilling comprises a mineral oil base, such as crude oil or a blend of different crude oils, and a stabilizing agent formed from a basic silicate, such as potassium or sodium silicate, and a neutralizing soap-forming material such as fatty acids, tall oil, soya bean oil, fish oil, linseed oil, or cyclic soap-forming acids such as cresylic or naphthenic acids. The fluid may be weighted by the addition of comminuted solids such as crushed oyster shells or limestone, fuller's earth, barytes, galena, clay or aluminium silicate. Proportions are given.
