Abstract

A drilling mud for use in sinking oil or gas wells by the rotary boring process comprises a mineral oil, finely divided solid material and tall oil or a soap thereof. The mineral oil may be diesel, fuel or stove oil, while suitable solid materials are limestone, calcium carbonate, clay, barytes, iron or lead oxide, galena, oyster shells or fuller's earth. The tall oil may be crude or refined and may be wholly or partially neutralised with a base such as a hydroxide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, ammonium hydroxide, an organic base, a water-soluble salt of an alkali or alkaline earth metal with a weak acid or any mixture of these. If desired the base may be added during the preparation of the drilling mud so that the tall oil soap is formed in situ. The drilling mud may also contain a blown or sulphurised asphalt or other artificial or natural oxidised asphaltic bitumen or material, such for example as gilsonite. If the solid material is suspended in water as a thin slurry, tall oil is added and water is decanted, the particles of solid material become coated with tall oil, so that on drying a powder is obtained which is very convenient for use in preparing a drilling mud of the present invention. In examples, drilling muds are prepared from (1) stove oil, crushed oyster shells, tall oil, blown asphalt cut back with petroleum fraction, and aqueous potassium hydroxide; (2) stove oil, calcium carbonate, tall oil and aqueous sodium hydroxide; (3) stove oil, bentonite, barytes, tall oil and aqueous potassium hydroxide. For comparison purposes details are given of the preparation of the compositions (a) of Example (1) without tall oil or with linseed oil instead of tall oil and (b) of Example (2) with soya bean oil instead of tall oil. A drilling mud comprising diesel or similar oil, crushed limestone or clay, blown asphalt and tall oil, with or without barytes, iron or lead oxide, or galena is also described. Specification 533,933 and U.S.A. Specification 2,223,027 are referred to.
