591,636. Dielectric heating. BAKELITE, Ltd. Dec. 21, 1944, No. 25621. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1943. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Groups V and XXXVII] Preforms of plastic material are heated by high-frequency electrostatic means while previously-heated preforms are being moulded in a press and ejected from the press. Figs. 1, 6 and 7 show an arrangement comprising a lower plate electrode 24 connected to earth at 27 and to the press P and loading mechanism L by conductors 28, 29, and an upper plate electrode 23, both electrodes being connected by leads 25, 26 to the generator G. Plastic preforms to be heated are contained in a carriage disposed between the electrodes. The carriage comprises a metal plate 50 and a non-metallic low-loss board 51 having preform-receiving cavities 47. The plate 50 rests on wheels 60 supported in bearings 61 backed by springs 62 in cavities 63 in the electrode 24. Fig. 9 shows another arrangement in which the lower electrode is an endless intermittently-moving metal belt 221 and the upper electrodes are plates 231 suspended over the belt, the preforms P being heated in stages during their travel from left to right. The belt may be replaced by a circular rotary table.
