Abstract

Fibrous material is first wetted with a plasticiser for a thermoplastic substance and then mixed with said substance in finely divided form and compacted, the thermoplastic substance being gelatinised. Suitable fibres are cotton, regenerated cellulose, flax, silk, wool, hair, ramie, hemp, jute, coir, sisal, asbestos, glass, slagwool, rockwool, disintegrated leather, and synthetic fibres of nylon or casein. Suitable thermoplastic substances are polyvinyl resins (plasticized by tricresyl phosphate or dibutyl phthalate), cellulose esters (plasticized by dimethyl phthalate or diethyl phthalate), ethyl cellulose (plasticized by castor oil or cotton seed oil), polyvinylidene resins. In an example, tricresyl phosphate containing red lead and a dye is slowly added to cotton fibre with stirring. Finely divided polyvinyl chloride is then added. The mixture is then heated and compressed to an extent depending upon whether a felt-like or leather-like product is required. The heating and compacting may take place in a mould, or sheets may be produced by a continuous process.ALSO:Fibrous material is first wetted with a plasticiser for a thermoplastic substance and then mixed with said substance in finely divided form and compacted, the thermoplastic substance being gelatinised.
