Abstract

590,950. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE' H. T. April 20, 1945, No. 10014. [Class 100 (ii)] In a sheet-feeding apparatus a calipering- device for stopping the apparatus if two or more sheets are fed over the feed table is constructed of a lever 6 pivoted at 10 to an adjustable bracket 1, and a gauge piece 9 pivoted to the lever and set to permit of the passage of a single sheet but to be raised against the action of a spring 18 if double feed occurs. A pin 11 then acts upon a trip arm 12 which is moved to arrest the normal oscillating movement of a cam 2 and thus actuate clutch mechanism to stop the feed. The cam 2 normally acts upon a roller 16 to raise the lever 6 to free the sheet being fed from the action of the gauge piece 9 after the calipering action. The lever 6 is controlled by a screw 4 and spring 5 to set the device for sheets of different widths. In a modification the gauge piece 9 is formed with a bent-up end which lies over a screw fixed to the trip arm 12, the pin 11 being dispensed with.
