[Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] The speed of the film is provided with extra stabilization by means of a fly-wheel on a sleeve rotatably mounted on the stabilizing- drum shaft and resiliently connected to the mechanism so that its direction of rotation tends to neutralize the effect of friction acting on the drum shaft. Fig. 2 shows a sectional view of the mechanism in which a gear-wheel 3, connected to a power source, drives the sleeve 22 by means of a gear-wheel 4 rigidly fixed to it. The sleeve 22 is free to rotate about the drum shaft 18, which is fitted with a fly-wheel 21 and mounted in a bearing 20. A secondary sleeve 25, free to move on, but in frictional contact with the sleeve 22, is also fitted' with a fly-wheel 26 and is driven through. a spring filter 7 by the sleeve 22, and drives in turn the film sprocket shaft 8 via gear-wheels 5 and 6. The sound film passes over the drum 2 (with which is associated the sound gate 9, lamp 10, Fig. 1 (not shown), optical unit 11 and photocell 12), back over the filtered sprocket 1, and has a loose loop before passing over the holdback sprocket 13 coupled to the sleeve 22 via gear-wheels 15 and 16. The direction of rotation of the drum-shaft 18 is accordingly similar to that of the sleeve 22.
